MOVE OVER MACGYVER – Home Inspection Nightmares
I loved this title from a This Old House On-line article so much that I couldn’t resist passing along the link. For laughs, take a cruise through these pictures of homeowners’ or their completely lame hired help who came up with creative (albeit some dangerous) solutions to house repairs.
Here’s a few MacGyver moves I’ve encountered in my tenure:
A dryer vent and range hood vent sharing duct work (that went nowhere) and a wall –blowing a collection of greasy balls of lint into an attic space…Nice little fire hazard!
Endcap tile pieces attached with bubble gum. Naturally, the goop had dried out and the tile was falling off. Seriously, was this home repair by five years olds.
The wall that wasn’t really a wall – I recall inviting a client to demo their own closet wall as the General Contractor and I couldn’t detect any framing in it. We discovered someone had simply nail gunned a foam board sandwich (two sheets of dry wall & the foam core) to the ceiling and floor joists.
Moral of a story, that’s really no laughing matter: Use a competent Licensed Contractor or Tradesman…and a Licensed or Certified Designer can’t hurt either!
